Why Tems Calls Her Genre of Music "Spirit"

During the interview, the Nigerian singer revealed why she's making music

Fast-rising singer/songwriter, Tems has shed more light on why she prefers to call her type of music Spirit.

She was answering questions in an interview with Teen Vogue when she made the revelation.

During the interview, the Nigerian singer revealed how she wants her story to be told and why she's making music.

The interviewer remarked on the style of her music, saying that it is quite distinct — a mix of genres with its own Afro nuances.

"You call it “Spirit.” What would you say this “Spirit” genre is and what influences go into it?"

Tems answered: I like to crack jokes a lot so in a way, I was joking [when I called it Spirit] but also I wasn’t. What I mean is that’s where my songs come from. They come from my spirit. [Music is] a very spiritual experience for me and that’s why I call it Spirit. It makes you feel and for me, it comes from a very pure place.

According to her each song she makes has a story behind it.

"There’s always a story behind my songs. They’re mostly my thoughts. The process is really just me experiencing things and then me expressing how I feel about these experiences. And that’s mostly what I’ve done for this EP."
